The Bravo Brothers – Dwayne and Darren, are having a great time playing together. Clt20.com requested the younger brother Darren to interview Dwayne. Darren readily obliged and tried to bring out the personal side of Dwayne.
The brothers had a great time interacting with each other, enjoying it as much as they perhaps do playing together.
Excerpts:
Darren Bravo: Dwayne, tell me what did you enjoy doing the most during your childhood days growing up in Santacruz streets?
Dwayne Bravo: Growing up in Santacruz streets, what I enjoyed doing most after coming home from school was going on the roads, playing football, playing cricket and playing on the beach. That’s what I enjoyed most as a child. I looked forward to coming off and doing those things in the afternoon – running races on the road, football and everything.
Darren Bravo: Did you always have in you the ambition of representing West Indies?
Dwayne Bravo: Yes. I grew up in a family that loves cricket and has a cricketing background. Growing up in Santacruz as a kid, I watched a lot of cricket. All the young kids in Santacruz used to go to local Harvard Coaching Clinic. I was a five year old and that’s when the love for the game actually hit me. And when Brian Lara became such a big sensation, I knew that all I wanted to do in life was get involved in the game and play for the West Indies.
Darren Bravo: Of course and the rest is history. Tell me, how do you rate Airtel Champions League Twenty20 tournament?
Dwayne Bravo: I would say it has been good, very well organized and well put together. It was only expected that in India a lot of people would come out and support the tournament. India is a beautiful country to play cricket. It is a successful tournament and I am happy to be part of the tournament. I am very happy representing my country in this tournament and I feel more comfortable playing for Trinidad and Tobago. We have done well so far. Two more games are left and hopefully we can win this tournament.
Darren Bravo: Dwayne, you have a younger brother playing in your team. How does it feel to have your younger brother in the team and do you feel any pressure having him playing in the same team with you?
Dwayne Bravo: While growing up I used to always wish that one day I and my brother can actually play in the same team together. I used to look at John Brothers, growing up at Queen Park where they used to train and practice. We also have the Ganga Brothers. I used to ask myself may be one day we will have the Bravo Brothers. My brother is young. But I am happy that he has matured and come a long way. I am happy that we are actually playing together. It is a great feeling.
Darren Bravo: You are 27. Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? You will be 37. Very old man
Dwayne Bravo: Next 10 years, hopefully I will be coming to the end of my cricketing career. I would like to look back and see how I contributed to Trinidad & Tobago and West Indies cricket. I would like my name to go down the record books as one of the best all-rounders to have actually played the game. I want to be respected for that. And I will try to help youngsters develop their game and push younger players as much as possible.
Darren Bravo: Could you explain to the people how did you motivate your younger brother? Obviously he is playing cricket and obviously you want to make him famous. So in what way did you motivate him at the tender age of 14, 15 or 16?
Dwayne Bravo: Well, he used to always ask me for bats. That’s one way. He is a left hander and I am a right hander. The only gear he could actually get from me was that. Every time I gave him a bat, he either used to give it away or break it. So then I told him that the next time you need a bat, you have to score a hundred or something like that. In a way, I actually put a price on it. That motivated him and he kept scoring hundreds.
Darren Bravo: Very easy question. What does Dwayne Bravo like to do for fun? He is 27. What does he like to do when he is not playing cricket?
Dwayne Bravo: I am 26. I am not 27.
Darren Bravo: Sorry. My mistake (laughs).
Dwayne Bravo: Well. I enjoy shopping a lot. Whenever I get a chance, that’s the first thing I do. I love going to malls. I love buying a lot of clothes, jewelry and stuff. So that’s something that relaxes me. I love night life.
Darren Bravo: I understand that you’re a Beenie Man fanatic.
Dwayne Bravo: Beenie Man is my favourite dance hall artist. For those who don’t know of him, he is a Jamaican and known for his dance and music. I think worldwide he is one of the best in his field. And I am very happy to be one of his closest friends. When I was growing up, I always used to listen to his music. There are very few people in the world whom I wanted to meet and Beenie Man was one of them. When I actually met him, it was great feeling. I am very happy to meet special people.
Darren Bravo: How difficult is it to be away from your family when you are touring with the West Indies for two or three months?
Dwayne Bravo: It is very difficult. But as I said before, I have grown up in a family that loves cricket and understands the situation. So therefore it makes a lot easier. So far as my daughter Dwaynice is concerned, I am fortunate enough to have a daughter who is so intelligent at such a young age. She actually understands my job and knows that I need to be away. I am very happy that my relatives are so close to each other that my daughter can actually go and spend a night by her grandfather or grandmother or anyone. The hardest part is that I am not able to see my daughter as I much as I’d like to even when I am home. That is something she and her mother understand. I am just doing this to make sure that my family is set after I finish my career.
Darren Bravo: You seem to be a responsible family man..
Dwayne Bravo: Obviously. I have a daughter. Any child is special but a daughter to a father is more special. I love my daughter. She means a lot to me. She is everything to me. And in everything I do, I think about her. All this hard training that I have been going through, all this hard work that I have put in and all my aspirations are for my daughter. She must be able to live in good stature. I hope I will be there to support her to make sure that she gets the best education and best schooling. I want to make sure that she is well looked after and she can live her life comfortably.
Darren: Your brother is playing in Airtel Champions League Twenty20 now. One day would you like to see him represent an IPL team as well?
Dwayne: I would love to see him represent Mumbai Indians. I am here playing with the Mumbai Indians. I have already initiated talks with the Mumbai management to actually get him on board. Most definitely I would like to see him in IPL as well.
Darren Bravo: Thank you very much Dwayne. And may God continue to bless you
