Reifer: We are not scared of anyone

Captain Floyd Reifer is confident his understrength West Indies side “can win the Champions Trophy, just like every other team competing can.”

“We enjoy the conditions and pitches in South Africa and are looking to do well.

Improving our game is a serious matter to us and will take every opportunity to win,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We have watched Pakistan a lot on the television. We have been able to come up with some tactics but they have never watched us play, so that’s good for us,” he enthused.

“There is a nervous energy in the camp but we are not scared of anyone.”

“We are in the working stages. We are looking to rack up experience and take on the challenges set before us, whether that’s against Pakistan, India or Australia,” he added…

The West Indies enjoyed a 10-day training camp in Barbados prior to their arrival in South Africa, where they enjoyed insight from former greats like Wes Hall and Sir Garfield Sobers. Reifer is looking forward to capitalising on the wisdom the players gained from their Barbados retreat.

“Guys like Sobers, Hall and Philo Wallace were around chatting to us, imparting things to us that we can use in the Champs Trophy. That was good,” Reifer concluded.

Windies media manager Philip Spooner was curt in his response to the possibility of senior stars returning to topflight competition mid-Champions Trophy, after the ICC offered such allowance despite tournament regulations stating otherwise, should the WIPA-WICB row be resolved .

“We have 15 men here. There are 15 men in the squad and those are the 15 that will play here,” Spooner concluded.
