The West Indies Cricket Board today announced the West Indies 15 man squad for the Cricket World Cup 2011.
@WICRICNEWS
Welcome back Sarwan!
Devon Smith is the only one I would really question in the squad.
That said I don't know if we had a better option in the 30. Maybe Kirk Edwards but to have a man debut in a world cup might not be the best go.
West Indies 30 Man Squad
Lionel Baker
Adrian Barath
Carlton Baugh Jr
Sulieman Benn
Dave Bernard Jr
Tino Best
Devendra Bishoo
Darren Bravo
Dwayne Bravo
Jonathan Carter
Shiv Chanderpaul
Kirk Edwards
Chris Gayle

Jason Holder

Nikita Miller
Nelon Pascal
Kieron Pollard
Kieran Powell
Denesh Ramdin
Ravi Rampaul
Kemar Roach
Andre Russell
Darren Sammy
Ramnaresh Sarwan
Devon Smith
Gavin Tonge
Devon Thomas
I cannot see Baugh adding more value to teh team than Ramdin and although I am a big, big fan of Devon Smith but I question his inclusion.
The final 15 is not bad even with Devon and Baugh Jr.
This and the T20 format is where I think Sammy merits being Captain as he is a must pick in these teams, However he has a sharp learning curve if he is to improve on some poor field placings in the high pressure, fast paced game.
Rally, Rally, Rally
I cannot see Baugh adding more value to teh team than Ramdin
Ramdin has been getting away with that for a long while now and it has made him relax. It would be good for him to get in a solid FC tournament and any A-team tours.
That may be so but the point remains that Baugh adds no more value than Ramdin and in fact he adds less. His keeping is no where near and if we wanted to be progressive I would have Thomas instead.
Excluding Ramdin will not be the solution. We do not have a Keeper batsman like otehr teams have although Ramdin has not done enough with his talent. We need to accept and in tests you do not expect Ramdin to remedy the collapse of the top order which is too frequent. As an example Haddin's success has been based on the the top order succeeding and he has the freedom to express himself and that he does. Rarely does he have to dig tyhe team out of a hole and with his past success and confidence was able to do just that in the recently concluded ashes.
In my humble view we are getting too hung up on the keeper batsman thing and great if we have one but my view is that it is a specialist position and it should be treated as such. Most objective people will tell you that Ramdin is quite simply the best gloveman around and until we get someone better he should be in the all the teams.
You only have to look at Baugh's keeping in this tournament to see what most will say about Baugh.
Ah damn I did not realise Russell was in the squad of 15!!!! Big mistake. Far too raw, wayward and a world cup is not the best place to introduce such an inexperienced player.
I also do not know how many times Smith can be recycled.

I cannot say I agree with that statement.
Baugh was off for a long while then returned in the SL test series and showed good form with both bat and gloves.
I would rate his SL seires up there if not better than any of Ramdin's recent series.
Obviously breaking in Thomas in a WC situation would not be ideal. It was always going to be between Baugh and Ramdin.

I am sure his batting factored into the decision. I am not all too sold on him either but Gibson has made it clear that he has a liking for the brand of cricket russell plays and that he feel russell can be worked with.
Well you might be on your own with the rest of Jamaica because I was in Sri Lanka for that tour and although frustrated with the rain I was looking out for Barath, Russell and Baugh.
Baugh was average behind the stumps but showed some real grit with the bat. If we talk about new dawn, it would have been an ideal opportunity to introduce Thomas. Baugh is a backwatds move.
There was that mystery of Barath having a cold and could not play so Smith played abd was credible. He has been reinvented too many times and the selectors need to move on but they are probably fulfilling their quota.
Russell, I was happy he was given a chance, looked raw and a bit wayward and looked quite unfit but I think he has the potential to get up to 90 mph. His selection for the WC is, however, premature and the runs he concedes from his bowling is unlikely to be outweighed by his batting. The fact that he has a great work ethic is good but not really relevant for a big tournament.
The basis on which I make my decision on the keepers is their net worth and that is, would the runs they score outweigh any mistakes behind the stumps and I do not believe Baugh will have a net worth compared to ramdin as the latter would make less mistakes behind the stumps.
russell in the SL series was deff not the finished product
he might of been ironed out by gibson now
the WC might be better suited for him, he made impressions on the selectors on the A team 50 over games
Have you seen him bowl recently? Well he is far from the finished article he has only played 11 FC matches and is learning but the WC or any other big tournaments are not the place to blood inexperienced players.
He has been elevated far too quickly from no where to a full contract and now this. For me we do not make youngsters work hard enough to earn the call up, a classic example is that of Xman.

I agree with you.
I also remember trying to make this point to you about your all start team with Jags, Simmons etc and you were not buying it.
No you got it wrong and I will clarify for the last time.
I said that if Simmons could not make the top 30 then we must be very strong. As it happens the only players I would have left out from the WC squad would have been Smith, Russell and possibly Baugh but could live with this choice. Simmons could easily have taken Smith's place especially as he bowls and keeps. You may say the same for someone like Perkins or Hyatt for that matter.
I do not mean to insult but I sense you live in the Americas and therefore due to no fault of yours, you have limited opportunities to attend Domestic matches which to my knowledge are not televised abroad but can correct me if that assumption is incorrect.
Statistically and otherwise Jaggernauth was by far the most consistently successful spinner for some time and had one test and was dumped unlike Benn who has been given an extended run coming from no where really. Yes Benn has done ok but the point was about giving a player a run. Can you imagine doing the best and being ignored? Surely that will impact your game and the last two seasons have been relatively poor by Jaggernauth's standard and therefore he would not be the first 5 names on your list.
Whether it is Jaggernauth, Simmons, Kirk Edwards, Kieron Pollard, Kraigg Brathwaite, Holder or whoever, they have to work hard to value the spot when they finally get a shot that they will give blood before relinquishing the colours I would sadly never wear.
I think WI had to learn the hard way with young players.
The thought always was that when people did not perform you replace them with younger players.
This affected many decent players. Wavell Hinds comes to mind.
But we found out that this only led us to a lower par unprepared players.
The right approach is being taken now in the HPC & the A team tours. lets hope we can maintain those development avenues for the future. We are already seeing the benefits of just 1 short year of these two forms being in action.
match,
Excellent points!!
Also we harp on about the great team but I also harp on that all the players bar one in the 74 tour to India were professionals and through to the end of our dominance the majority of players were professionals in England so they learnt their trade before being selected, in the main.
Nowadays players learn on the job but what happens we see a couple of good innings and we elevate players. One they are not ready, two when they fall it is harder to rebuild their game and confidence without support and importantly they do not value, cherish and RESPECT being a West Indian player.
Lara carried drinks in Australia and elsewhere when he was ready but when given his chance did he slip up? No. Ok he is slightly exceptional because of his GOD given gift but you get my drift.
With respect to the HOC the intake is far too low and allowing for natural wastage in these matters we need to consider upping the intake and discharging those who are not making the cut.
What are the immediate benefits you see?
Simmons and Samuels should of been in that squad
I certainly think Simmons should have been in ahead of Smith, however based on the criteria, performances, Simmons and for that matter Samuels could and should not have been in the squad.
I do think in the case of Simmons, he could have at least made the 30 man preliminary squad.
Anyway if Samuels continue to score heavily in the four day competition, as does Simmons, they will do no harm to their chances of being considered in the future.
I hope the starting 11 today start with a win as they mean to go on.
Rally....Rally.....Rally
Simmons might in fact be in a better position for his future by staying at home. Devon will play as a back up and that might affect any performance if he gets the chance.
Simmons should have a full FC season which if he can take full advantage of he will post allot of runs and stake a strong claim.
Problem is he will be competing with Samuels and Deonarine
matchstick,
As said above
