This is the value of having your best keeper in a team. It is said the days of specialist keepers are gone but in the West Indies we do not have a keeper batsman like the other nations. Ramdin has the capability and potential as a batsman but we need to stop trading in potential rather what is delivered.
My contention is the net worth of a keeper and that is would the runs he scores outweigh his errors and irrespective of the format, in my view, Ramdin has the highest net worth.
I look at Healey and Haddin and although they have had a few innings where they have salvaged their team's position, they have built their careers and healthy averages on the back of a performing top and middle order. They have had the freedom and confidence to express their natural games.
If you explore some of the others say, Prior for England is a natural batsman and he was dropped as his net worth was low and he is now back as his keeping has come on leaps and bounds. He is capable of opening the batting in ODIs and high up the order in tests if required.
All players need to have competition and in the absence of that some complacency will creep in. Despite the consistent failings of th top and middle order, Ramdin should have shown more determination and tenacity in approaching his innings as he did against England in the West Indies.
Ramdin needed to have had a reality check and that should have been done earlier and at home as I think to leave your best gloveman in a top competition like the World Cup is a big mistake.
If there was by far a better option I would be supportive as we need to have the best players playing for us.
So what we have done is to go to a man who has been tried, tested and failed the test. This said Baugh has put his head down and has had some fairly good contributions and of course I wish him well but has he the highest net worth? No.
Rally...rally...rally....
Another failure with the bat today.
The record is great and though it might be indicative, it does not necessarily mean that he is a great/good keeper. Bowlers have an essential part to play a this record also to create the opportunities for the keeper.
Hope he can keep working on his batting and start putting up runs his talent promises.
matchstick,
Statistics do not lie but it is not the only benchmark of excellence. Trinidad and Tobago have , probably, had one of the weaker attacks in the four day format so it is a credit for Ramdin to take so many catches and this was recognised in his run in the West Indies team. To the eye his agility and other aspects he is one of the best we have ever produced as a technical keeper. Catches must be taken and it either points to the bowler (but still the catch has to be taken) and it could also point to making half chances in chances etc.
We know of Baugh's flaws and hopefully his game has improved so he is not exposed in the World Cup but although from a keeping view point he is statistically the worse of the main contenders (Ramdin, Thomas and Wilton) he has the best batting average with a return of 36. The others average 29, 24 and 24.
I will maintain the issue of NET WORTH.
Who do you think is the best keeper? Also who do you think is best for West Indies and why?
